In light of the current global COVID-19 pandemic, 21 LGBTQ+ organisations have come together and formed the Global COVID-19 Research Initiative on SOGI (GCRI-SOGI) and are working to develop and conduct a global study on the effects of the pandemic on LGBTQ+ organisations and individuals. Now in Phase 2 of its implementation, this study seeks to conduct quantitative and qualitative data collection exercises across the globe to understand the repercussions of pandemic on target populations.
The study aims to answer five primary research questions to achieve the following objectives:
- To assess the domain-level impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and implemented measures on LGBTQ+ communities.
- Domains: Political, Institutional & Systemic, Economic & Human Resource, and Biopsychosocial & Interpersonal
- To identify key global and region-specific trends in LGBTQ+ communities’ experiences.
- To determine what supportive and risk factors are associated with LGBTQ+ communities’ experiences during the pandemic.
- To investigate the predictive nature of intersecting vulnerable/marginalised identities on LGBTQ+ communities’ experiences during the pandemic.
With the far reaching scope of this study, we are now seeking the support of four (4) Regional Co-Researchers based in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The consultants will be expected to work 30 days full-time to split into 25 days for Phase 2 (data Collection) and 5 days for Phase 3 (Analysis) over the course of six months, primarily to support the qualitative component of the study. Consultants also possessing experience in quantitative research methodologies are strongly encouraged to apply. Members of the LGBTQ+ community are also strongly encouraged to apply.

A global collaborative network of LGBTI organisations has identified the need to create a clear picture of the impact of COVID-19 on LGBT people, communities, and organisations around the world. Since the outbreak of the pandemic they have faced multiple problems that are in many cases very context-specific. For international human rights and development organisations, governments, civil society organisations and donors it is of utmost importance to have a thorough understanding of the current needs of LGBTI people, communities and organisations to tackle the impact of COVID-19. In order to promote an effective response, this network has commissioned a global study for which has designed a study and methodologies by which research has not to be conducted.
- To support the development and oversight of the global study at the regional level.
- Provide support to the Lead Researcher in the implementation of Phase 2 of the research, with a special focus on qualitative interviews and analyses.
- Attend advisory board and sub-committee meetings and support related activities as required.
- Contribute to the development of relevant study protocols and documentation.
- Support with the analysis of qualitative research and associated report writing.
- Take an inclusive and participatory approach to the research process.
The successful candidate must:
- Thorough experience working in the field of advancing human rights, LGBTQ+ rights and/or SRHR locally, regionally and internationally;
- Proven skills and track-record in social science research, including qualitative and participatory methodologies—expertise in quantitative is an asset;
- Support efforts to recruit participants from respective regions;
- Full professional working proficiency in English;
- Abilities to work on the basis of an intersectional approach with cultural and LGBTQ-specific sensitivity, especially within the context of your region;
- Have the capacity to work in a team and autonomously; ability to follow-up on time and multitask; be able to manage their own time and meet internal deadlines.
- Good skills on security, (digital-) safety, sensitivity and well-being of activists;
- Be organised and have high attention to detail;
- Work well under pressure and tight deadlines;
- Have administrative and IT skills and be proficient with Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite; and
- Have strong interpersonal skills.
The successful candidate ideally:
- Possesses the ability to speak and write in any of the following languages (in addition to English):
- Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic, Portuguese, Swahili, Mandarin (Simplified and Traditional), and Hindi;
- Has direct experience with LGBTQ+ and/or intersectional feminist activism;
- Has direct experience in advocacy and policy work;
- Has relevant experience in working in international teams.
- The position is virtual; no relocation is expected or will be supported by ILGA World or its affiliates.
- The consultants will be expected to work from their current location and attend virtual meetings in support of project activities.
- The consultant will be expected to work for 30 days until November 2021. The exact working hours and days can be flexible, but a candidate should be available to work during regular full-time working hours.
- Consultants will receive a compensation of USD 6,000 for the duration of the consultancy.
- Successful consultants will be required to work closely with the Lead Researcher as well as representatives of LGBTQ+ organisations from around the world.
- Based on differences in time zones, successful consultants may be required to be available for meetings outside of regular working hours to support project activities.
- There may be a possibility of extension based on the availability of funding, which would mean that the contract could be extended.
