Research Officer

TGEU is looking for a 100% (40h/week) Research Officer* to begin by 1 September 2021 for an initial period of 24 months. The Research Officer will develop, conduct, and supervise TGEU-led research, including the Trans Murder Monitoring, Trans Rights Map, and hate crime reporting projects. The Research Officer will ensure TGEU’s research projects are informed by and relevant to vulnerable trans communities as well as widely visible and disseminated, raising awareness about the experiences of violence, discrimination, and other human rights abuses of trans people, and supporting the development and publication of TGEU reports.

This position is located in Berlin, Germany. Given the current COVID-19 situation, the position may start remotely with relocation to Berlin in late 2021. Due to COVID relocation challenges and funding restrictions, preference will be given to applicants who are already eligible to work in Germany.

Job description

The Research Officer will be responsible for developing, conducting, and supervising quantitative and qualitative research with different methodologies, including TGEU’s Trans Murder Monitoring, Trans Rights Map, and hate crime reporting projects. The Research Officer will ensure TGEU’s research is informed by and relevant to vulnerable trans communities. Because these projects are conducted in collaboration with TGEU staff, members, and organisations from around the world, the ideal candidate will bring both research and people skills to the role. Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop, coordinate, and implement TGEU’s research work.
  • Compile, verify, and analyse data on anti-trans violence and discrimination, including leading data collection for the Trans Murder Monitoring, preparing resources for annual Trans Day of Remembrance updates, and expanding community-based hate crime monitoring.
  • Work closely with TGEU policy staff to document and report on trans-specific legal protections in Europe and Central Asia through the Trans Rights Map.
  • Develop, and represent TGEU in, research-related partnerships, strategies, and collaborations with trans activists, researchers, and social movements around the world.
  • Support development and publication of TGEU reports to raise awareness of violence, discrimination, and other human rights abuses impacting trans people.
  • In partnership with Communications staff, develop and execute plans to ensure research and publications are widely accessible, visible, and disseminated.
  • Coordinate and communicate with partners and contractors.
  • Prepare data to be easily understood by various audiences, and present research findings in public settings.
  • Contribute to internal and external reporting, and support development of grant applications as needed.
  • Contribute to the strategic development of the organisation and contribute to other tasks as required.

Who we are looking for

For this position, we are looking for a researcher with strong competency and interest in trans issues. The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience working with trans and/or LGBTI organisations
  • Value community-based research
  • Feel comfortable working as a sole contributor as well as part of a team
  • Be organised and methodical
  • Understand and embrace intersectionality in their work
  • Have good stress management skills, support systems, or other wellbeing practices to manage secondary trauma from hate crimes monitoring

Required: Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes

  • Excellent knowledge of English (spoken and written) with strong writing skills
  • Ability to carry out in-depth research and learn new topics quickly
  • Comfort with and ability to support complex working processes
  • Comfort managing a high workload and prioritising tasks as needed
  • Commitment to TGEU values and policies

Preferred: Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes

  • Ability to communicate in Spanish
  • Understand power dynamics and issues experienced by marginalised groups
  • Ability to take responsibility for planning how and when to carry out the tasks required to complete this project, and when to ask for input from others
  • Experience writing publications in English for a variety of audiences, and writing about complicated issues using accessible language or visual aids
  • Organising experience in trans, LGBTQI, or other social movements
