tdovTeaming up to challenge Wikipedia’s white cis straight male supremacy and celebrate TDOV !

TDOV is short for Transgender Day of Visibility and is celebrated March 31st. What better way to raise trans visibility than by doing an Edit-A-Thon, and having a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism by adding some trans, POCs, queers, activists, artists or others, to ensure that our h*stories are not lost !

This Edit-A-Thon is taking place at TGEU’s offices in Berlin with a big outside terrace available, drinks, snacks and dinner, and is co-organised by Artists Without A Cause, Room 4 Resistance, and with support from Art+Feminism.

Why?

Wikimedia’s gender trouble is well-documented. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation, 90% of Wikipedia articles written by men (the majority of which are western, heterosexual and cisgender https://suegardner.org/category/editors/) and 85% of the biographies are about men (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Writing_about_women). This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge.

How?

We will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, as well as drinks and snacks. Bring your laptop, power cords (we will have one or two extra ones) and ideas for entries that need updating or creation although we will have a list of people you can pick from.

When? Where?

  • @Berlin
  • 5.30 – 10 pm You are welcome to walk in and drop by for an hour, the whole evening, or just say hi.
  • TGEU, Heidelberger Str. 64, 12 435 Berlin, when you are on Heidelberger find 63 then go down the path right of the building
  • Dinner and drinks will be provided
  • We have funds to cover childcare costs for the evening, let us know if you need a babysitter during the edit-a-thon.

Who should attend: People of all gender identities and expressions. We will provide name tags with preferred pronouns for everyone.

All participants will also receive a Guestlist spot to the next Room 4 Resistance party taking place Saturday, May 13th in Berlin.

I don’t live in Berlin but would like to contribute ?

We will have a live stream of part of the event on Facebook, and will create an online chat where people from across the world can chat with us to edit. If you would also like to edit Wikipedia articles at the same time from the comfort of your own home you can let us know and we will also share the articles which you are working on.

If you have ideas of who should be added to Wikipedia, you can send us names to add to the list on mina@tgeu.org
