[English] On 4 December 2012, a coalition of NGOs issued a call for the “Abolition of Prostitution” in the European Union. Transgender Europe (TGEU) is worried about the recommendations proposed by this call and its potential impact on trans sex workers.

IRELAND
[English] Four representatives from TENI appeared before the Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection. They called for gender recognition legislation that reflected the real lives of trans people in Ireland.

[English] Following a visit to Ireland in October, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Nils Muiznieks, has written to the Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton to highlight the lack of legal recognition of transgender people. While noting legislation is currently being drafted to bring Ireland in line with its human rights obligations, the Commissioner expressed his concern that no clear timeline is provided.

TURKEY
[English] In addition to religious or ethnic minorities, a recent report on media hate speech found 35 items that employed hate speech directed at the Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender (LBGT) community. In addition, the report says the Turkish press in its representations of transvestites and transsexuals associates these individuals with “crime” and “social unrest.”
