Transgender Europe is looking for a part time (80%, 32h per week) Global Program and UN Officer for an initial period of 12 months starting as of January 2018.

Transgender Europe (TGEU) is a European non-profit, non-governmental umbrella organisation working for the full equality and inclusion of all trans people in Europe. The network includes trans and other organisations that support or work for the rights of all trans people across Europe. The mission of TGEU is to support and strengthen the trans movement and to be a strong voice for trans rights in Europe and beyond.

Job Description

The Global Program and UN Officer will be responsible for implementing TGEU’s activities in relation to the UN as well as working together with the Transrespect Officer in implementing TGEU’s Transrespect versus Transphobia Worldwide (TvT) project.

The Global Program and UN Officer will be part of TGEU’s Projects Team.

The place of work is located in Berlin, Germany.

Key responsibilities are:

  • Develop and implement TGEU’s work with UN human rights mechanisms;
  • Organise the trans advocacy week in cooperation with other regional and global organisations;
  • Support and enable regional, national and local trans activists to participate in UN human rights mechanisms to increase attention on the human rights of trans people;
  • Work together with colleagues in TGEU’s Transrespect versus Transphobia wordwide project and support its implementation. This includes working on the legal and social mapping of trans communities’ situation across the globe as well as the development of easy to use advocacy tools;
  • Raise awareness about the experience of violence, discrimination and other human rights abuses of trans people internationally;
  • Support TGEU’s fundraising activities for our global work;
  • Contribute to strategic development of the organisation;
  • Contribute to internal and external reporting;
  • Other tasks, as resulting from organisational processes.

Who we are looking for

For this position, we are looking for someone who strongly cares about equal rights of trans people across the globe and is highly committed to the aims of TGEU. Someone who has worked in the field of human rights and has ideally NGO-work experience (paid or unpaid) – preferably internationally.

What should you bring

  • Qualification
    • Degree in international relations, human rights law, ethnology or other social sciences or equivalent qualifications obtained through relevant work experience in the field.
  • Experience
    • At least two years of professional experience in the area of human rights, UN mechanisms and/or social research;
    • At least two years of work experience in a national or preferably international non-governmental organisation is a plus;
    • Work or volunteer experience in global, international or regional trans activism;
    • Work or volunteer experience in LGBTI and/or human rights related fields is desired.
  • Skills
    • Sound knowledge of UN human rights mechanisms is highly desired;
    • Robust advocacy and negotiation skills;
    • Ability to navigate through hostile environments;
    • Excellent knowledge of English (spoken and written);
    • Good knowledge of another UN language, preferably French or Spanish;
    • Ability to handle complex working processes;
    • Familiarity with intercultural and international approaches;
    • Ability to manage a high work load;
    • Sound ability to work individually and within diverse teams.

We offer:

  • An 80% (32h per week) position starting on January 1st, 2018 for an initial period of 12 months with a possibility to prolong the contract contingent on availability of funding;
  • A motivated team that will allow you to implement your own ideas;

  • Salary of 32.160€ per annum
  • 1500€ of relocation support to Berlin.
