Share your experiences in our new survey: Law Beyond the Binary in Europe & Central Asia

We warmly invite non-binary adults in Europe and Central Asia to take part in a new research survey exploring their experiences with the law. The survey aims to better understand how non-binary people want their gender identities to be recognised by the law, particularly on their identity documents.
What is the survey about?
The survey explores how people whose gender identity is on the non-binary spectrum experience the law, and whether they would like to see the law changed to better accommodate gender identities beyond the binary.
Aims of the survey
The survey hopes to create a better understanding of how the ability (or inability) to access identity documents with sex/gender markers beyond the binary impacts the daily lives of people in Europe and Central Asia. Ultimately, by increasing knowledge and awareness – among policy makers, civil society, academic researchers and the general public – the survey aims to contribute to the work of developing legal systems which are more inclusive of people whose gender identity is on the non-binary spectrum.
Who designed the survey?
The project is led by a team of four academics who are experts in gender, LGBT issues and the law (Dr Peter Dunne, Dr CQ Quinan, Dr Joz Motmans and Dr Marjolein van den Brink), some of whom are non-binary. Trans and non-binary researchers from TGEU, ILGA-Europe and OII Europe were also involved in designing the survey and gave input on the questions.
Who can take part in the survey?
You can participate in this survey if:
(a) you are aged 18 or older;
(b) your gender identity is on the non-binary spectrum; AND
(c) you live in Europe or Central Asia.
What will I need to do?
In this study, you will complete an online survey where you will be asked questions about yourself and your experiences of the law (in particular, your identity documents). You will also be asked whether/how you think the law should be reformed to better respect people whose gender identity is on the non-binary spectrum. You will have the opportunity (but will not be required) to take part in follow-up focus groups.
When can I take part?
The survey is open from 1 February 2025 – 30 April 2025.
Access the survey in eight languages
The survey is available online in eight languages: English, BCMS, Dutch, French, German, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.
Can I share the survey?
Yes, please share the survey with other non-binary adults who live in Europe and Central Asia. We’d like to reach a large and diverse sample of non-binary people. However, please be careful about where you post the link to avoid potential malicious responses.
