TGEU Press Statement: Disabled Trans Women – more needs to be done

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on the situation of women with disabilities in the EU on 20 November 2018. In it the Parliament highlights repeatedly that disabled trans people are affected by intersectional discrimination.

TGEU welcomes that disabled trans people have been identified for their increased risk of discrimination and impoverishment but demands more and concrete action: The EU Commission and Member States should take immediate action ensuring the right to healthcare, freedom from torture or cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment, the right to live independently, and the respect for privacy of D/deaf and disabled trans people.

“Disabled trans people are still too often overlooked and left behind. Beyond the report’s focus on employment and education, disabled trans people need concrete measures to have their rights recognised: the right to healthcare, freedom from torture or cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment, the right to live independently, and the respect for privacy remain too often still illusionary concepts, as our research shows. It is high time for action to support in particular further marginalised disabled trans people who have other intersecting characteristics, such as migrants, refugees, sex workers or people living with HIV.” comments Dinah Bons, TGEU Strategic Director.
