Explore migration, identity, and belonging with us
The Distances We Call Home traces the unacknowledged rift between Malta’s progressive LGBTI reputation and the lived realities of LGBTI migrants who inhabit the Mediterranean island on the border of the EU.
Systemic neglect and discrimination are revealed through the intimate testimonies of four cases involving five people, spanning Turkey, Southeast Asia, Colombia, Egypt, and South Asia.
The film uncovers the situation in Malta where legal gender recognition (LGR), healthcare access, employment protections, and asylum conditions fracture along lines of race, class, and migration, even as migrants find safety and security on the island they long to call home.
What this means for our communities
This documentary speaks to the realities that many in our communities face at the intersections of trans rights, migration, racial justice, and access to safety within and beyond Europe.
This is a unique opportunity to engage directly with the creators, ask your questions, and reflect together on these urgent themes.
