Big win: Defeat for anti-trans bill in Czechia
The Czech Senate just blocked a bill that would have imposed state-mandated conversion therapy, a bathroom ban and extra legal hurdles for gender recognition.
The bill was defeated after a wave of public mobilisation, including 5,000 petition signatures in 24 hours. TGEU congratulates Czech trans activists and the senators who listened to them. Our member organisation Transparent wrote a press release with all the important details.
The bill is part of a bigger trend: increasing anti-trans campaigns importing UK- and US-style tactics across Europe, while European courts and institutions keep affirming trans people’s right to recognition, protection and respect.
TGEU calls on Czech lawmakers to implement a comprehensive law ensuring an accessible and transparent legal gender recognition process based on self-determination, with no age limit. This will stop leaving trans people’s legal status open to political attack and fulfil the country’s human rights obligations.
