Georgia’s new anti-LGBTI laws threaten fundamental rights and freedoms

The Parliament of Georgia voted in the third and final reading for laws aimed against LGBTI people by restricting their rights to non-discrimination, health care and education, freedom of speech and peaceful assembly, and the right to security.

Today, the Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union said that Hungarian immigration authorities must correct a trans person's gender marker in national registries when requested.

In a judgment published last week, the Italian Constitutional Court found that non-binary peoples' rights are protected by the Italian Constitution. 

The European Court of Human Rights published its decision on the revision of  Y.T. v Bulgaria case, highlighting significant issues with legal gender recognition (LGR) in the country. Despite the case being deemed inadmissible, the Court underscored Bulgaria’s obligation to establish a robust framework for LGR.

On May 7, the Advocate General Court of Justice of the European Union said that Romania's refusal to recognise changes of forename and legal gender marker acquired in another Member State is contrary to the rights of EU citizens.

The Czech Constitutional Court ruled against the requirement of sterilisation for legal gender change, calling it a severe violation of human rights.

In a historic vote today, the Swedish Parliament have simplified the process for legal gender recognition. The updated law means that trans people will be able to change their gender markers on official documents with a certificate from a doctor.

Today, the German Parliament has adopted a legal gender recognition law based on self-determination. The new law ends four decades of patronising trans people and declaring trans people as mentally ill.
