ECtHR rules Polish prison authorities violated trans woman’s rights by denying access to hormone therapy

The ECtHR found that Polish prison authorities violated a trans woman’s right to private and family life by denying her access to hormone replacement therapy while imprisoned.

In a judgement published yesterday, the European Court of Human Rights found that Russia violated the right to private and family life of a trans man and his two foster children by terminating the foster care agreement on grounds of the man’s transition. 

The European Court of Human Rights published its decision on the revision of  Y.T. v Bulgaria case, highlighting significant issues with legal gender recognition (LGR) in the country. Despite the case being deemed inadmissible, the Court underscored Bulgaria’s obligation to establish a robust framework for LGR.

We joined 51 organisations calling on the EU to honour commitments to victims of crime by adopting a strong Victims’ Rights Directive.

On 7 May, the EU adopted a Directive on minimum standards for equality bodies. Equality bodies now must consider the gender identity, gender expression or sex characteristics of a (potential) victim of discrimination.

Today, TGEU (Trans Europe and Central Asia) launches its annual update of the Trans Rights Index & Map, which documents the legal situation of trans people in Europe and Central Asia. 

On May 7, the Advocate General Court of Justice of the European Union said that Romania's refusal to recognise changes of forename and legal gender marker acquired in another Member State is contrary to the rights of EU citizens.
